I'm on the same boat. My 5 years old daughter goes to sleep at 9pm and wakes up ready to go at 2am. It takes at least 3 hours for her to go back to sleep. 2 Mg of Melatonin help a whole lot to sleep the first 4 hours and to set a "Time to go to bed habit". Under the sugestion of other person in the comments I have started to give her 5-HTP before going to bed with the Melatonin and so far so good we are on the second week without any bad night. She wakes up but she goes back to sleep in 15 minutes and half of the nights she just sleeps the whole night. 5-HTP is converted in Melatonin and Seratonin by our bodies so in a way it becomes a really slow release Melatonin remedy. I found also very useful some B-6 vitamin and Magnesium in the morning. That keeps her somehow more alert during the day (Better eye contact and more specific language) and she is more tired at night. I hope this helps somehow.
