Hi! My son is mildly autistic. He is 3 and is now talking and putting sentences together. We are so proud of his growth, but I feel guilty for not doing the GF/CF diet. How do I know if it will help if I don't try? My husband doesn't believe in it and w/out his full support, it feels impossible. Noah hasn't had the stomach problems I read about. My question is this: If limiting his G/C would that help or is it all or nothing?
Also, should I have his urine tested to see if he has that high protien?
Thanks for any advice! :)
My understanding is that the GF/CF diet is an all or nothing thing. Sure, you can slip up a bit here or now. But, as I understand it, if your child has a gluten or casein sensitivity, you know immediately when you have slipped up.
You could try limiting these products as much as you can in your life and seeing if it makes a difference. The problem is that a GF/CF diet is incredibly difficult to begin in the U.S. My husband is Chinese and so it was much easier for us. :)
Thinking in terms of Asian, cuisine, however, perhaps you could start slowly pushing your family in that direction. It would mean phasing out milk and cheese and replacing bread with brown rice or wild rice. Bag lunches without bread are a litle tricky, but you just send in things that need to be warmed up in the microwave, like meat and rice leftovers. Oh, and if you use soy sauce, switch to the wheat-free soy sauce.
I do most of our grocery shopping, and I just sometimds tend to forget to buy things at the grocery store and we have to make do with what we have in the pantry...
I think it will be hard to pull off if he isn't supportive. You need him to follow the same dietary rules when he is taking care of the kids alone. Plus, you will need his support and encouragement when the going gets tough...
