A typical day in the Winfield Street Elementary School special education classroom in Corning, NY, has the hustle and bustle of most other classrooms; however, there are some significant differences. Since each child with autism or other developmental delays learns in individual ways, there are 4 adults in the classroom for 11 children. The children rotate from activity to activity, participating in circle time, music, and the learning center, among others. The classroom is visual; there are pictures on the walls, colors and numbers, and even class pets - a salamander and a fish. Most children are in this classroom for 2 to 3 years.
