The eXceptional Orchestra in TN was founded Kim Kredich, the mother of a son with autism. Jazz composers and professional musicians work with 40 children, some with disabilities, some with none, to create music and instruments as unique as each child. While not exactly music therapy, orchestral rehearsals encompass social interaction and activity-based activities as children make instruments, contribute verbalizations, and splatter paint onto a large musical staff. The paint splatters are interpreted by the musicians as notes, and the children use their the paint brushes as drum sticks. Kredich says, "The X and the O are important letters in the name eXceptional Orchestra. The X represents a barrier, while the O is the opening for getting through that barrier."
