Mark and Racquel Johnson, California parents of a child with autism, recently started the National Autism Institute. The Johnsons saw a need in their area for therapies and activities for kids all year long, especially in the summer when school is not in session. The area has early intervention therapies including speech and occupational therapies, but when the children get older, there are fewer activities, such as a summer camp experience. Most of the kids the institute will serve attend Maxwell Elementary School’s Leaps and Bounds class and have found out-of-school activities to be very expensive. The institute will include academics and year-round sports therapy that includes golf, soccer, and tennis. The National Autism Institute is currently in fund-raising mode.
