Yvette Prefontaine, a young artist in Canada, says her paintings at the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts are "metaphors" for her journey with Asperger syndrome. That is quite a concept for the soon-to-be fine arts graduate who had communication issues as a youngster. Prefontaine says, "When something is unplanned, I see an empty frame." She imagines the solution as a picture, something she learned through expressive art therapy. Many people on the autism spectrum are more visual than communicative and Prefontaine explains it's easier for her to be shown how to do something rather than be told how to do it.
