Georgia teacher, Barbara Gaertig, wants the children with autism she teaches to be equipped to handle everyday life skills. For the children in her class something as natural as getting a haircut may cause sensory integration issues - the noise of the clippers and blow dryers for example. Along with trips to grocery stores, and restaurants, Gaertig began a "haircut boot camp" using social stories to help children get ready for their first visit to the hair salon.
