Irish Task Force Concedes that No Single Approach Can Meet Needs of All Children with Autism

Mary Hanafin, Minister for Education in Ireland, reports that the Irish Task Force on Autism agrees generally that there is not one single treatment approach for all children with autism. The task force "recommended that a range of methodologies be used with children with autism in all school settings." Applied behavior analysis (ABA), in conjunction with one-on-one therapy can help a child increase social interaction and increase the potential to be mainstreamed in school. The Irish government provides three educational pathways: ordinary classroom; special classroom within the school, or in a specialized school.
