Manor House School to Fill Need for Verbal Behavior Therapy in MA

When Susan Danton could not get the Barnstable public school system in Massachusetts to provide the verbal behavior approach for her son with autism, she decided to open Manor House School to fill that void. The verbal behavior approach is based on applied behavior analysis (ABA), but is closely allied with the work of B.F. Skinner, "who analyzed the basic components of language and broke them down into several concepts, including "echoics" for echoing sounds and "mands" for requesting items." One verbal behavior therapist uses the example that the child should not just identify a cookie as a round object, but be able to ask for the cookie, and know that it applies to the same object that is stored in the cookie jar. Manor School's goal is to mainstream children back to public schools.
