Music's Structure and Repetition May Help Autism Symptoms

The Choir of Hard Knocks in Australia is just one example of the therapeutic power of music. Music therapy is an intervention used more and more frequently in medicine: singing to sick babies in the hospital, reducing blood pressure, and providing comfort to children with autism. Ann Lehmann of the Australian Music Therapy Association says, "Music has a structure through its underlying rhythm and repeated melodic patterns which can provide comfort to a child with autism, yet it also offers a degree of spontaneity and flexibility which can help children with autism become more playful."
