Zachary Hamrick is a 22-year-old triathlete with autism. Diagnosed at age two, Zachary was always an active child. His father explained, “He’s got preternatural balance. No stress, complete focus, no fear whatsoever.” Zachary learned to ride a bike in one day and learned to swim on his own, now he and his dad train for triathlons together. Although Zachary has a limited speech, when he competes, he sings entire scores from Disney movies. He has received therapies from the Alpine Learning Group in New Jersey. When he’s not racing, Zachary is learning social living skills such as cooking and cleaning and holds a part-time job at a nursing home. His parents hope the combination of athletics and social skills will assist Zachary in living an independent life.
