A growing number of paraeducators are working one-on-one with children with autism. Paraeducators, whose jobs are instructional in nature and who provide direct services to the children, are trained in various therapy methods that include sign language, picture exchange communication system (PECS), and speech therapy. Other issues that might otherwise slip through the cracks in a group situation are quickly addressed with one-on-one therapy.
