Since there is no medical consensus on what causes autism, there is little agreement on treatment; however, that does not stop the debate. A treatment under scrutiny, hyperbaric cxygen therapy (HBOT), is a treatment in which "pure oxygen is delivered to patients confined to pressurized chambers for an hour a day for several weeks. Traditionally used to cure deep sea divers with decompression illness, doctors and parents are hoping that extreme doses of oxygen will jump-start dormant or damaged brain cells in childre with autism.
