Ahead, a school in Calcutta, India, has helped children with autism and other developmental disabilities since 1979. The children are taught life skills, motor skills, music, and art - often one-on-one with teachers, volunteers, or therapists. Each child has a visual schedule with their picture on it and images of what they are expected to do during the day. And, so that the children might one day work in the community, they are taught cooking and book binding skills. The director of Ahead, Asesh Banerjee Chowdhury, says, "If we make these children self-sufficient, we will consider ourselves successful."
