Marmite is the only spread that disguises medication, which Luke Bain, a child with autism, must take to decrease violent outbursts and severe anxiety. Marmite, a favorite vegetarian sandwich spread with B vitamins, has been in short supply in New Zealand since its factory has been under repair. When the community of Otago learned of the problem, they came together to donate enough jars to get Luke through the shortage. Luke’s mom, Sharon works for Autism New Zealand and has offered to send her extra jars to other children in need. During this shortage, the Sophie Elliott Foundation Trust has accepted jars of Marmite to auction for their foundation and they hope folks will bid on the Marmite to give to Luke. The communitiy effort has raised autism awareness, and has taught children the benefits of sharing with others.
