News: Sign Language Helps Children with Autism Communicate

Etel Leit, founder of SignShine and a language specialist, says that for children with autism, their strongest sense is sight. "Sign language allows them to rely on this strength while reducing their reliance on weaker audio-verbal senses." The entire family can learn sign language so that all can better communicate with their autistic child. Communication builds self-esteem and allows children to express emotions that might otherwise remain hidden.
