B.F. Skinner's verbal behavior method as therapy for children with autism has been "rediscovered" and touted by Vince Carbone.
Carbone, who has a clinic for applied behavioral analysis (ABA) in NY, finds the verbal behavior method more engaging and fun for children. He suggests that mands (requests for things) should be introduced earlier in the ABA process. "I'm not interested in the list of words a child knows early on. Socialization starts with manding. Discover what kids like and put them in that situation, then give them the words that relate. We want meaningful verbal behavior, not an imitation."
