Social Stories can be "Command Central" for Children with Autism

St. Clair County, MI schools are using social stories to help children with autism construct the events of their day; this allows for structure and mainstreaming in the schools. Social stories can be a child's "command central" for the day: "They are the maps that help the children navigate the social mores and rules other children learn more easily." For example, a child carries a chart with school events or "chores" written or pictured on one side that the child can move the other side when the task is complete. This helps with events like fire drills, or a meeting that might disrupt the usual events of a day.
