When Karolyn Wootton’s son was diagnosed with autism a year ago, she wasn’t sure what that meant. Armed with new autism information, she wanted to spread autism awareness in the Calgary area. Coincidentally, her friend, Dalene Richelle and her band Lantana, were asked by Autism Treatment Center of Texas to write a song about autism. When Richelle called Wootton to tell her about the fundraising song, Wootton shared a breakthrough with her son. Richelle explained, “The most beautiful moment she shared with me was she looked at her little boy and was like ‘you want to tell me something but you don’t know how to say it, you don’t know how to communicate with me.’” The song’s theme is an acknowledgement of the “different language” a child with autism might use to communicate. Behind the Smile is name of Wootton’s Web site, which inspired the title of the song.
