The Caern Project Provides Sensory Stimulation for Kids and Respite for Their Parents

The Caern Project in Scotland is truly a community venture: funds were raised for this respite care center by parents and supporters of children with developmental disabilities such as autism. The initiative was begun by Cherie Blair. While their parents get a needed break and quality time with the rest of the family, their children receive one-on-one care in a setting that includes a garden to run in and a sensory room filled with percussion instruments and lights. The children typically stay at Caern Project once a week; there are bedrooms, a kitchen, and out-of-doors recreation.
