The Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA), created by Justine Cassell of Northwestern University, is a virtual child who interacts with autistic children. The virtual child is a cartoon character, about 8 years old, who looks like a boy to boys and a girl to girls. The virtual child engages the children using language and gestures and helps to increase speech and social interaction. Children often feel more comfortable with a virtual child who doesn't judge and is less intimidating.
