Zoo Phonics Helps Youngsters with Autism Learn to Speak Better

Zoo Phonics uses animals to teach speech and language skills to children with autism. Susan Cameron, a long-time speech therapist in Michigan, launched this program in Monroe County schools using songs and Beanie Babies to teach the alphabet. For example, "P" is for penguin; "K" is for kangaroo. Ms. Cameron is getting ready to retire after 40 years in speech pathology, but it doesn't mean she's going to stop working. She and her husband founded Cameron House, a group home for adults with autism that includes their son.
