Layperson Summary:

Biomedical treatments can be helpful for children with autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The authors believe that any good intervention program for autism will involve many different treatment approaches. Often, the treatment program will include improved diet and vitamin supplements. This small study (10 children) was designed to look at the effects of a mixture of therapies (including biomedical treatments) to help children with a combined diagnosis of autism and ADHD. All patients in this study had high levels of lead in the urine. After 3-6 months in the study, all 10 children had lower levels of lead in the urine and their autism and ADHD symptoms were improved.
