Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Volume 36, Issue 3, p.401-411 (2006)

Layperson Summary:

Low doses of risperidone can effectively treat aggression in individuals with mental retardation and autism.

This study lasted 46 weeks and included 40 children, adolescents, and adults with various levels of mental retardation and autism. Low doses of risperidone (1 mg/day for children and adolescents and 2 mg/day for adults) were just as effective as high doses and had fewer side effects. Children tended to be more irritable when given risperidone, than were adolescents and adults. The most significant side effects were increased appetite, weight gain, and drowsiness. Individuals with mental retardation were most vulnerable to weight gain.
