Many families do not participate in early intervention programs because of ethnic barriers and length of wait time.
EarlyBird is a government-funded, parent-focused, psycho-educational autism early intervention program in New Zealand. Only 15% of target New Zealand families went to EarlyBird meetings in 2003-2004. The authors used telephone surveys to find out why target families did not go to the meetings. Many families who knew of EarlyBird could not go because they had to take care of their families. The authors proposed a model for how to improve turn out for early intervention programs.
