Layperson Summary:

Videos may help people with autism learn to perform new tasks and behave in new ways.

This article describes how videos can be made and used to help teach children with autism how to do certain behaviors. Computers and camcorders have made it possible for many people to make their own good videos. Studies have shown that videos of a person with autism (video self-modeling) are helpful for maintaining behaviors and helping the person to generalize behaviors. The author suggests that the behavior or task be video taped only if the task is developmentally right for the person. Videos can also be made at school, but families must first give written consent.
