ABA therapy | applied behavior analysis | autism | drug therapy | positive reinforcement | self-injury
Behavioral therapy such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy can be used to treat self-injury behavior and should be tried before drug therapy.
This article reviews the data on the use of behavioral therapy to treat self injury in people with autism. ABA therapy has been used for at least 40 years to treat self-injury. In some cases, the ABA therapy has used punishment and this has worked to stop the self-injury. Newer versions of ABA therapy use positive reinforcement (as opposed to punishment) to stop behavior. Also, the more recent studies include younger and younger children.
