Layperson Summary:

Virtual reality may be an important tool for teaching children with autism.

This study was designed to see if virtual reality could help children with autism learn safety skills. The children were able to generalize their fire safety skills, but the ability to generalize varied a lot from child to child. There didn't seem to be a big difference between children who learned safety skills through virtual reality or those who learned them through standard means. The plus with virtual reality is that good training could take place in half the time taken for standard training. The authors suggest that virtual reality be considered as an approach to training people with autism on anything that is important.
