Drug therapy can be used to treat aggression and self injury in people with autism.
Studies have shown that people with autism differ from other people in the level of several important brain chemicals. This review article describes the use of a type of drug therapy (antipsychotics) to treat autism. Most drug studies have only looked at people who have just autism (as opposed to autism and another issue or Asperger syndrome). Both haloperidol and risperidone have been useful in treating symptoms of autism. They do not have any effect on the core symptoms of autism, however.
