Layperson Summary:

Buspirone may help with the aggressive behavior of some people with autism.

Some people with autism have problem behaviors that include temper tantrums, aggression, and hurting themselves. There are many different drugs that are used to help with these behaviors. This case report describes the use of the drug buspirone to treat a 33-year-old woman with autism and aggressive behavior. She did not have any major side effects with the buspirone and it helped with the aggression towards herself and others. The authors suggest that doctors think about using buspirone therapy for patients with autism who do not respond to other treatments.
