Layperson Summary:

Risperidone may cause incontinence in some children.

This case study describes a boy who was prescribed risperidone to treat behavior problems. The boy had problems with urine control (incontinence) after starting risperidone therapy. The authors do not know how risperidone causes incontinence, but they suggest that doctors discuss this potential side effect with parents before using risperidone. The drug valproate may be able to treat the incontinence. Other medications such as quetiapine and olanzapine may also be useful instead of risperidone as these drugs are not known to cause incontinence.
