Change in Autism Core Symptoms with Intervention

Source:

Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders (2007)

Layperson Summary:

Very young children with autism can really improve with Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) therapy.

This study was designed to see how symptoms of autism can improve with treatment. The study looked at two different types of early childhood therapy: Eclectic-Developmental (mixture of therapies) and ABA. They found that ABA therapy worked better than Eclectic-Developmental therapy at improving core features of autism. They believe this is because ABA therapy targets specific problems found in people with autism. They suggest that future studies look to see which types of children are most likely to improve with which types of therapy.
