Layperson Summary:

Children with autism may have other conditions that make their treatment even more costly.

This paper reviews therapies used for children with autism and compares it to treatment used for children with low IQ. Treating children with autism involves treating behaviors, but also treating other conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). Children with autism are more likely to visit a psychiatric outpatient clinic. Children with autism also cost Medicaid nine times what a typically developing child costs Medicaid. The author calls for more studies to make sure that treatments given to children with autism are helpful.
