Layperson Summary:

About 74% of parents use some type of CAM therapy as a treatment for their child with autism.

This review article describes the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies used to treat autism. Many therapies target the gut problems that are very common in children with autism. GI problems are a very real issue and, of all of the children with gut symptoms and autism, 69.7% had acid reflux (reflux esophagitis), 42% had constant stomach pain (chronic gastritis) and 67% had stomach bleeding (chronic duodenitis). Other CAM therapies target problems with energy (metabolic problems), problems with certain foods (food sensitivities), and toxic effects of heavy metals. The main theme of the paper is that while many parents use CAM therapies, there is very little scientific data to support the use of CAM therapies.
