Layperson Summary:

Gestalt therapy may help children with autism connect with others and grow emotionally.

This paper describes how Gestalt therapy can be used as a treatment for autism. The authors describe social development as a type of emotional development. Gestalt therapists believe that children with autism have an internal life and the therapist seeks to connect with the child at the level of the shared human experience. In order for the child to mature emotionally, the relationship with the therapist must be strong and should be without judgement. During intervention, the child should start to see his or her own feelings and start to share those feelings with the therapist.
