Article summary (posted Dec 8, 2008):

Psychiatrists may be able to help parents adjust to a new diagnosis of autism.

The purpose of this study was to see how parents cope with a diagnosis of autism. The authors questioned 17 parents in Taiwan. Many parents began by telling themselves that the autism was not serious. The parents coped by self-change, developing treatments for their child, and seeking support. Some mothers cancelled work and school plans so that they could care for their child.
