Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability, Volume 31, Issue 4, p.204-209 (2006)

Layperson Summary:

Treatment with risperidone does not change the quantity or quality of food eaten by children with autism.

This study was designed to see if children with autism who are taking risperidone eat differently than children with autism who are not taking risperidone. The study depended on parents to report how much of what types of food the children were eating. The authors found that, on average, children with autism eat healthy diets. The children (aged 5-13 years) ate an average of 2400 calories a day. The children who were given risperidone therapy gained weight even though they did not eat more calories.
