Layperson Summary:

When children with autism are placed in a special education classroom or normal classroom, they tend to stay in that type of classroom throughout their time in school.

This study was designed to see how parents and teachers decide which type of class to put a child with autism in. The study found that children with autism were more likely to be in special education classes than were children with Asperger and pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS). Also, the lower the IQ of the child, the more likely the child would be placed in a special education class. Children were also placed in classes based upon how well they were able to speak. The authors conclude that children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) need to have many different placement options within the school in order to best have their needs met.
