Layperson Summary:

Most speech therapists in the United Kingdom (UK) believe that many of the children labeled as autistic today would have been described as having language difficulties (semantic-pragmatic difficulties) in the past.

This national survey was designed to analyze the UK'€™s system of speech therapy and see whether it was meeting the needs of students. The study specifically looked at how national policy of inclusion of children with special needs has been implemented at the local level. The survey found that most speech therapy services are language units that are a part of the main schooling. Most speech therapy occurred during primary education (before age 11). Children receiving speech therapy were described using the term students with "€specific speech and language difficulties."€
