The picture exchange communication system (PECS) can be used to help children with autism learn to communicate.
This review article describes studies that looked at whether or not PECS therapy could be used to teach children with autism to communicate. The author noted that most of the studies had been done with boys. Also, most of the studies had been done with children who had autism as opposed to Asperger's Syndrome. The good thing about PECS is that it can be used as part of the child's daily routine. The other good thing about PECS is that it is easy to apply PECS to new situations and therefore PECS can be used to help children with autism adapt to new situations.
