Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy may work better if an object that the child is interested in is included in the therapy session.
This study was designed to see if the special interests of children with autism can be used to help them play with other children in an applied behavior analysis (ABA) setting. Two of the three children in the study preferred to play with the item that was in their special interest area. The children wanted to talk to others about this item. The authors noted that it may be hard to take this specific interest and generalize it to other items. Generalization will be important as the child attempts to learn the back-and-forth of talking about an object that someone else wants to talk about.
