Research: Efficacy of Sensory and Motor Interventions for Children with Autism

Authored by Baranek, GT in Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Volume 32, Issue 5, p. 397-422, (2002).

Article summary (posted Sep 25, 2006):

This review of the research behind sensory integration therapy concludes with concrete recommendations to include sensory integration therapy in educational programs despite the fact that most studies that evaluate the effects of sensory integration therapy show mixed results.

Young children with autism have unusual responses to sensory stimuli, and unusual motor patterns. The author suggests that these symptoms may have implications for early diagnosis and intervention. This review article summarizes the sensory and motor difficulties that can be seen in children with autism and reviews the scientific research on sensory integration therapy. The review includes articles published in the following databases: MEDLINE, CINAHL, and PSYCINFO.
