Layperson Summary:

Parents can be trained to provide speech therapy to their children with autism.

This study looked to see if trained parents would be able to teach preschool aged children with autism to talk. The authors found that parents who were trained to teach speech did teach speech to their children throughout the day and the children made progress in learning to speak. In the case of this study, the parents learned two new ways to teach speech. They taught speech to their children as a part of their daily routine, at home and elsewhere. The authors note that this study should be repeated with more diverse families.
