Authored by Ogletree, BT, Oren T., and Fischer MA in Exceptionality, Volume 15, Issue 4, p. 233-247, (2007).

Article summary (posted Feb 8, 2008):

There are many different types of speech therapy, but the best speech therapy is tailored specifically for the child and family.

It can be very hard to provide good speech therapy to a child with autism. This article describes the best practice of speech therapy for children with autism. The authors describe three things factors of good speech therapy: the world around the child (ecological systems), how well the therapy suits the child (goodness of fit), and how well the therapy suits the family (culturally competent family centeredness). The best speech therapy looks at all of these factors to create a therapy program that will work for the child. The authors go on to describe the best ways to use these factors to design a program for a child.
