Layperson Summary:

It is good for doctors to talk with parents about scientifically proven therapies for autism as well as therapies that have not yet been scientifically proven.

Many different therapies have been tried for children with autism, but few have been proven to work. Unfortunately, claims for cures are often made even though there is no proof to support the statements. For example, while special diets may be helpful for some children, diet therapies are not yet widely accepted. In contrast, research has shown that behavioral and education therapies do help individuals with autism. In addition, drugs are frequently and effectively prescribed to help with behavioral problems and other symptoms commonly found with autism.
