Layperson Summary:

Risperidone may work best for children who have more severe tantrums or behavior problems.

It can be hard to decide whether or not a child with autism needs drug therapy. This letter to the editor describes the need that some parents feel to choose between drug therapy and behavior therapy such as applied behavior analysis (ABA). The author suggests that risperidone not be used for children who have mild behavior problems. Also, drug therapy is best begun after the doctor has tried to find out if there is a cause for the child's problem behavior. Drug therapy can be used with other interventions that support the child.
