While social stories therapy can help some children with autism learn positive behaviors, it is probably best at helping children learn to stop doing negative behaviors.
This study looked at whether social stories could be used alone to teach children with autism to improve social behavior. This study was different from other studies in that it used only social stories and not any other type of behavior therapy or treatment. Only one of the three boys in the study showed an increase in good social behavior after therapy with social stories. This boy (age 13) was able to learn to have good social exchange during free time. He learned from the social stories how to talk about his after-school hobbies with his classmates.
