Layperson Summary:

Integrated Play Groups (IPG) can help children with autism learn social skills.

The author describes how she uses IPGs as social therapy to engage children with autism in play. The groups include 3 "€œnormal"€ children (expert players) and one child with autism (novice players). The IPG is offered to children aged 3-11 and is run by an occupational therapist. The expert players are at least 4 years old and are trained in advance about what to expect and how to be kind and help the child with autism. The sessions have a set pattern and often begin with a visual schedule.
