Layperson Summary:

This review describes research in how best to help children with autism move (transition) from one thing to another.

At school, all children must move between tasks throughout the day. Most teachers have been taught how to help children cope with transitions. These common techniques may not be enough, however, for children with autism. This is because children with autism may have problems with routine. In most cases, transition techniques for children with autism involve telling the child in advance what will happen or showing them a picture of what will happen.
