Layperson Summary:

In this article, two doctors share their thoughts on how the medical system is failing families with autism.

There has been a great deal of progress in understanding autism from the research angle. We now know that autism costs society a lot. We are only now learning about risk factors and causes of autism. Doctors need to work harder to help those people with autism and their families by giving them a "œmedical home."€ Many families with autism do not have access to therapies and support. The medical system needs to find these families and give them treatment and services as early as possible. This will likely mean working with the parents to find the best treatments for each child.
